What flooding does to a paver field

Standing water and moving water do different damage. Standing water leaves silt in the joints and organic staining on the paver face, both of which clean off. Moving water takes the joint sand with it, and that is the damage that matters — it is invisible from a distance and it is structural.

The Ian benchmark

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Lee County on 28 September 2022 as a category 4, with storm surge reported as high as fifteen feet in the worst-hit areas and damage severe enough that recovery on Pine Island and in Matlacha has run for years. For hardscape the lesson that carried forward is a simple one: clean does not mean intact. A driveway can wash down to looking fine and still have lost the joint sand that holds it together.

The check that takes five minutes

Once the surface is dry, run a screwdriver or a key down a few joints across the driveway — near the apron, at the low corner, in the middle. If it goes in easily and deep, the sand is gone and the field needs re-sanding before anything else. Also walk it and feel for movement underfoot.

Do not seal it yet

The instinct after a storm is to clean and seal immediately. Sealing over silt-filled joints locks the silt in, and sealing a paver that is still holding moisture causes hazing. Clean, let it genuinely dry, re-sand, and seal when the weather allows — which after a September storm usually means waiting for the dry season anyway.

Insurance and documentation

Photograph the driveway before anything is cleaned. Whether hardscape damage is covered depends entirely on the policy, but the claim is much harder to make once the evidence has been pressure-washed away.
